Congratulations to Gloria Muench and her co-authors on their recent publication in Scientific Reports, titled “Digitalised multidisciplinary conferences effectively identify and prevent imaging-related medical error in intensive care patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
This study highlights the effectiveness of virtual multidisciplinary conferences (MDCs) in reducing imaging-related quality management (QM) events in intensive care units (ICUs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. By facilitating timely re-evaluation of imaging studies and fostering bilateral feedback between radiologists and ICU physicians, the implementation of MDCs led to a significant decrease in QM events—from 14.0% to 2.7%—compared to pre-pandemic levels. Notably, the study found that the presence of COVID-19 did not impact the occurrence of QM events, underscoring the robustness of MDCs as a quality assurance tool even under pandemic pressures.
This research underscores the value of structured, digital communication in enhancing patient safety and diagnostic accuracy. It serves as a compelling example of how adaptive strategies can maintain, and even improve, healthcare quality during challenging times.
